A Friend to Call Family"What good is a child that can't even wash dishes properly?!"by ShinyScribe
"Stop your crying, unless you really don't want to eat for the rest of the weekend!"
"Tell the nice social worker we're a happy family, okay?"
"I can't believe what I'm seeing."
The little girl's teary, dark green eyes opened up to see a young woman standing over her. The woman's eyes, light blue like the sky, stared at the uneven, tangled, wind-whipped waves of blonde hair that covered most of the girl's face. When the child saw the woman fold her arms across her chest, she rubbed her eyes with cracked, bleeding hands and looked away.
"I'm sorry," the girl said faintly. "I shouldn't be crying. I made you stop what you were-"
"No no no, not that!" The woman rubbed a pair of black-gloved hands through her own short spikes of green hair. "Clean hair," she said with a grin, "is happy hair. I know that sounds cheesy, but as a hairdresser I willingly put up with the cheese."
The girl rose from her sittin
Rigid Will Red, yellow and orange.
The maidens of Autumn will
Bow to Lady White.
The color you see
Will descend, crumble and fade.
Autumn is finite.
Your long-sleeved shirts will
Fail to offer warmth when cool
Changes to frigid.
Front yards once sporting
Pumpkins and monstrous faces
Will soon shine brightly.
Fear will become cheer.
Farewell to trick-or-treaters;
Greetings, carolers.
Feet that once crushed leaves
Will soon struggle for balance
On the icy ground.
Autumn's stay always
Gives way to Winter's presence.
Infinite cycle.
In time, Lady White
Shall melt like the Wicked Witch,
Giving way to green.
No season can stay
Longer than just a few months.
Mother Nature's will.
